Chapter 7

Cody didn’t think much time had passed when he woke. The first thing he felt was terrible, burning pain in his arms, and he struggled to breathe, opening his eyes to the dim light of a single bulb in the wall across from him. Shane’s father sat on a hay bale below it, gazing at him. Cody realized he was hanging by his hands from the ceiling.

“What the fuck?” he asked, his voice hoarse. He kicked, but his ankles were bound together with baling twine and he couldn’t reach the floor a foot below his toes. Nor could he reach the walls on either side of him.

He looked up again and saw that his wrists were tied with a wide leather strap, which was tied to a large metal ring, which hung on a rope from something up in the shadows overheard. His shirts—the denim one that had been Shane’s and his own T-shirt—were gone.

“I used to handcuff Shane first,” Mr. Seldon said, rising, and Cody saw he had a short, stiff whip in his hands. “But he broke them the last time.”

“Oh, God,” Cody said, suddenly understanding way more than he wanted to.

“Yes, it is for Him that I do this. As God’s Son suffered in pain, so did mine, for his sins. And so must you, for the sake of your soul. Especially you, for I believe you were the one who corrupted my beautiful son. It’s good that I met you today, so that your soul can go free.”

“Look, Mr. Seldon,” Cody said, “let me down, please.”

“But we haven’t started yet.” Shane’s father came close to him. His eyes were black, black and cold, and they looked nothing at all like Shane’s. Cody suddenly wondered if Shane’s mother had really died in childbirth.

He hoped he wasn’t about to find out.

The man’s arm rose, paused, and then fell. The pain was sharp and fast, like being hit by a tree limb that somebody walking first through the woods carelessly let go. The burn came a second later, but it was drowned out by a second blow, and then another, and another.

Cody screamed as loudly as he could on the chance somebody was outside, but the only response he got was the sound of startled hoof beats going quickly away from the barn. The blows came faster. Shane’s father chanted something Cody couldn’t make out. Maybe the guy was praying. Cody screamed again, but when he tried to get another deep breath, his lungs felt on fire. It got harder and harder to get even enough air to breathe.

He struggled, but there was nowhere to go. His back began to feel wet with blood.

“Come now,” Mr. Seldon said, sounding calm and reasonable. “Shane learned to stand much more of this. You must pay dearly. You lured my precious child into your evil ways, into your evil arms. You changed him. Did you think I wouldn’t notice?”

“It wasn’t me,” Cody heard himself choke out. “Please, I don’t know where he is.
